When America was first settled by Europeans, the expansion started from the East and spread to the West.  It would seem that the trend has come back into style.  Many Eastern and Mid Western states are seeing people move out in great numbers. In fact, Illinois saw the greatest number of people moving out in 2017. Why is this change occurring?  Many have sited high taxes, crime and climate as the main reasons for leaving.

While the Northwest is seeing the majority of this influx, Colorado has become a popular destination as well. With lower taxes, a strong economy, lower crime rates, great job opportunities and beautiful weather all year round, it's not surprising that so many are now calling Denver home.

By 2030, Metro Denver's population is anticipated to increase by nearly 50 percent to almost 3.9 million, with 800,000 new jobs being created.​
  • Income - Median household income in the Metro Denver area is 15.6 percent higher than the national median income. For example: The state’s median household income, $63,509 in 2015, was higher than the national average of $55,775.
  • Job Growth - US News and World Report ranked Denver #2 in job growth
  • Low Unemployment - Unemployment in Colorado is currently at 2.3% and has consistently been at or below 3% over the last year.
  • Health - The population in Colorado is among the healthiest in the nation, likely encouraged by the state’s outdoor activities, physical beauty and mild climate.
  • Technology Companies - Denver attracts some of the largest technology companies. IBM, Oracle, Google, Lucent Technologies, and Lockheed Martin all have offices in the Denver Metro area. Amazon has 3 warehouses and is on the short list of 20 possible locations for their second headquarters.
  • Marijuana - Though it has had many mixed reactions locally and nationally, the legalization of marijuana for recreational use has created 10s of thousands of jobs and the industry is now worth over a billion dollars.

Denver enjoys a very mild climate with an average temperature of 50 Degrees Fahrenheit. Denver gets 300 days of sunshine in a year. Though the city gets over 50 inches of snow each year, this often falls in big storms and rarely sticks around long. Most snow in the Metro area occurs in the Spring months of March and April.  Summers can be hot but without much humidity. Residents are active with several outdoor music and sports venues throughout the warmer months and enjoy the many ski resorts in the colder times of the year.

With more people relocating to Denver every day, traffic has been building. Luckily, Denver’s public transportation is easy, inexpensive and convenient. You can get pretty much anywhere in The Mile High City by rail or bus, and often get there faster than by car.
Bus Transit – Bus routes connect just about anywhere you want to go throughout the metro area. Check out the Regional Transportation District's homepage for routes, fares and other important information.
Light Rail – Light rail stations connect south Denver to downtown and Aurora as well as the suburbs to the west to downtown.  Soon the light rail will be open to residents of North Denver as well. Many of the RTD light rail stations have Park-n-Ride lots where you can park for free.  Again, check out the Regional Transportation District's homepage for routes, fares and other important information.
Denver International Airport – Denver’s airport also known as DIA is situated just 15-20 minutes from downtown and is a central hub for many airlines including Frontier, United, and Southwest. At 33,531 acres, it is the largest airport in the United States by total land area. DIA has non-stop service to destinations throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia serving 187 destinations (as of 2015). The airport is in northeastern Denver and is owned and operated by the City & County of Denver Department of Aviation. DIA was voted as the "Best Airport in North America" by readers of Business Traveler Magazine for six years in a row (2005–2010) and was named "America's Best Run Airport" by Time Magazine in 2002.

Education

Colorado is the 5th most highly educated population in the country.  Colorado ranked 1st in associates degrees and 2nd in bachelor’s degrees.  You have many options to advance your own education.
  • University of Colorado - The University of Colorado is a system of public universities in Colorado consisting of four campuses: University of Colorado BoulderUniversity of Colorado Colorado SpringsUniversity of Colorado Denver in downtown Denver and at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.
  • Colorado State University – Though not located in Denver, Colorado State University is a public research university located north of Denver in Fort Collins, Colorado. The university is the state's land grant university, and the flagship university of the Colorado State University system.
  • Metropolitan State University of Denver - Also known as MSU Denver or Metro State, Metropolitan State University of Denver is a public university located in the heart of downtown Denver. With 58 majors and 82 minors, the college is noted for a wide array of liberal arts and science programs as well as teacher education, business, aviation, and criminal justice programs.
  • Community College of Denver - Located on the vibrant Auraria Campus in downtown Denver, Community College of Denver is student-centered and dedicated to providing an exceptional education.
  • Red Rocks Community College - is a community college located in Lakewood, Colorado and Arvada, Colorado. Many local High Schools in the western suburbs have programs that give college credit through this institution.
  • Front Range Community College - Front Range Community College is a two-year institution of higher learning with campuses in Westminster, Colorado; Longmont, Colorado; Fort Collins, Colorado; and Brighton, Colorado.
  • Arapahoe Community College - Arapahoe Community College is a community college in Littleton, Colorado. It was founded in 1965 as the first community college to open in the Denver area.

  • The Mountains – Just a short drive from downtown, the mountains are a huge recreational draw for hikers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. Denver has 14,000 acres of parks in the nearby foothills of the Rocky Mountains: an immense mountain park system that covers an area almost the size of Manhattan.
  • Skiing/Snowboarding - Iconic ski resorts like Winter ParkBreckenridgeKeystoneCopper MountainVail and Beaver Creek are also fairly short drives for those who like tastes of both the city and the slopes, which are now year-round meccas for outdoor pursuits, festivals and concerts. Steamboat SpringsSnowmass and Crested Butte, also on the top of favorite North American ski and snowboard resort lists, are worth the extra miles and overnight stays with plenty of charm and great culinary, lodging and spa options.
  • Red Rocks – Red Rocks Amphitheater, One of the most iconic open-air music venues in the world resides in the foothills of Denver in Morrison, Colorado. Aside from the amphitheater, the surrounding park attracts hikers and nature enthusiasts alike.
  • Elitch Gardens - Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park, locally known as "Elitch's", is an amusement park in Denver, Colorado that is open May through October, and unique in that it is located in a downtown area.
  • Art Walks - The First Friday Art Walks are the signature event of Denver's Art District on Santa Fe. The District comes alive as thousands descend upon the Santa Fe Drive, year-round, rain or shine, for the First Friday Art Walks from 5:30-9:30 p.m.
  • Denver Art Museum - The building is a work of art in itself designed by famed architect Daniel Libeskind. With galleries showcasing more than 68,000 works by famed artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe, Vincent Van Gogh and Salvador Dalí, the Denver Art Museum houses one of the most impressive collections between Chicago and the West Coast.
  • Denver Museum of Nature and Science - The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is a municipal natural history and science museum in Denver, Colorado. It is a resource for informal science education in the Rocky Mountain region.  It features traveling displays from around the world that change every 3 months or so.
  • Fiddler’s Green - Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre is an 18,000-capacity amphitheatre located in Greenwood Village, Colorado. It is the largest outdoor amphitheatre in the Denver metropolitan area and is generally open every year from May to September.
  • Sports Teams – Denver has the most professional sports teams per capita of any city in the United States.
    • Football – Denver Broncos - The Broncos are 3 time Superbowl Champions that compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league's American Football Conference West division.
    • Baseball - Colorado Rockies - The Colorado Rockies are an American professional baseball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Rockies compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. The team's home venue is Coors Field, located in the Lower Downtown area of Denver.
    • Hockey – Denver Avalanche - The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado. They are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). TheAvalanche are the only team in their division not based in the Central Time Zone
    • Soccer – Colorado Rapids - The Colorado Rapids are an American professional men's soccer team based in the Denver suburb of Commerce City, Colorado. The Rapids compete in Major League Soccer as a member of the Western Conference.
    • Basketball – Denver Nuggets - The Denver Nuggets are an American professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Nuggets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league's Western Conference Northwest Division.
    • Lacross – Colorado Mammoth - The Colorado Mammoth are a box lacrosse team playing in the National Lacrosse League. The Mammoth have played at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, since the 2003 season.
  • Casinos – The mountain towns of Black Hawk, Central City, Cripple Creek, Ignacio and Towaoc house the ever popular casinos in Colorado.  These are all just a short 15-20 minute drive from downtown.
